Hazel O’Connor is 70 years old this week.
Back in 1981, she presented me with a Breaking Glass clock and a hug for making Will You a hit single. I had edited the saxophone solo so be used by Steve Wright when he was then doing the Saturday morning 10am slot and used to ready out wedding requests and dedications and I thought he might like to use the instrumental bed. When I arrived at work on the Monday morning, the BBC had been inundated with requests to find out what the music I had edited was.
I, in turn, advised Adrian Sear at A&M records that it should be released as a single and would definitely be a hit. He fed this back and the song was duly released and went to number eight. That song came from the same film as Breaking Glass of which I invited to the premier. The other big song from that film was Eighth Day, let’s enjoy the energy of that song.
