The legend that is Tom Jones is 80 this week.
Tom is in the minority of singers who sounds as good in 2020 as he did in 1965, I know, I saw him last year in Dundee. He’s never been out of the public eye and has a bigger profile now thanks to his regular appearances as a judge on The Voice UK.
The song I’ve chosen is a sad one and written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman in 1978. Putnam is famous for having written two previous UK number ones; Green, Green Grass of Home and D.I.V.O.R.C.E.
He Stopped Loving Her Today was first recorded by its co-writer Bobby Braddock but made famous in 1980 by the country singer George Jones after 18 months of attempting to record it due to infamous alcohol intake. In the end, the producer brought in some friends of Jones’ to hold him upright and steady at the microphone.
Jones died in April 2013 and the country singer Alan Jackson sang a version at his funeral. Tom first recorded his version in 1985.
Enjoy and, happy birthday Sir Tom!
