of the week

Peter was an Australian songwriter, born Peter Richard Woolnough in New South Wales and he would have been 80 this week.

In the 60s he was briefly married to Liza Minnelli and, despite never coming out publically as being gay, he was with his partner Gregory Connell from the mid-70s until Connell’s dead in 1984 from AIDs and Allen died in June 1992 from the same cause.

Among the songs he’s written are Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do) by Christopher Cross, Don’t Cry Out Loud by Elkie Brooks and, my favourite, I Honestly Love You by Olivia Newton-John. Here’s Peter’s original version of the song.
