Martha Johnson was the lead singer with the Muffins and is 70 this week.
The band was formed in Toronto, Canada in 1977. Even though in the lyrics of Echo Beach she says she was an office clerk, she was actually a medical receptionist which, is probably very similar, it just sounds more glamourous. She later married Mark Gane who was a member of the Muffins. The band is still going with just Martha and Mark as their members.
She was indulged in some side projects including recording a children’s album in 1995, which won her a Juno Award for Best Children’s Album. In 2001, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease but still records and actively promotes awareness. One of her other projects is called Rock Steady which promotes fitness for those with the disease.
Let’s remember this classic from 1980.
