Jimmy James & The Vagabonds

He was born Michael James this week in 1940, so he’s 80 years old this week.

He formed the Vagabonds in 1960 with an all black line up and performed predominantly ska and reggae music. In 1970, he broke up the group and asked his bass player, a white man called Alan Wood to form a new Vagabonds with an all white line up.

In 1976, their come back song was I@ll Go Where Your music Takes Me which peaked at number 23 but the follow up, Now Is The Time, went to number five.

Let’s remember that hit from Top of the Pops.
