Import number ones

Since the UK singles chart started in 1952, a total of 60 songs have charted on import sometimes because they weren’t avaiable in the UK or, later on, because the way the UK chart was compiled it allowed sales of European copies to enter before the UK version was released. The first song to chart on import was The Jam’s That’s Entertainment in 1981 which never had a UK release. Between May 1998 and September 2005 20 songs charted initially on import and then, when released officially in the UK,  went on to be a number one.  Here’s the list…

That’s Entertainment finally got an official UK release in January 1983 at the same time as all the other Jam singles being reissued …. https://www.45cat.com/record/posp482

Certainly an interesting list of chart entries – hope you can put the full list of 60 up at a later date, I wonder how many of them I have ….
