It was 60 years ago this week that Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens all died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, and event that became known as The Day the Music Died and commemorated by Don McLean in American Pie. Holly was 22, The Bopper (who was born Jiles Perry Richardson) was 28, and Valens was a mere 17.
The whole story is well documented, but 60 years on, their music lives, especially Buddy’s as he’d written and recorded far more songs than the other two.
Let’s remember, with fondness, all three
