Apple records

Following a conversation a few weeks back where someone asked me if i knew the first charting hit on the Beatles’ Apple records. I confirmed it was Hey Jude in 1968 which led to the further question did it have the APPLE 1 catalogue number. I said no, The Beatles never had APPLE numbers, but were assigned EMI catalogue numbers which began with an R followed by four digits beginning with either a 5 or a 6. The APPLE 2 – 49 numbers were given to other acts signed to Apple records.

Apple 1 does exist but it’s an extremely rare one-off copy of The Lady Is A Tramp by Frank Sinatra. It was made in 1968 after Ringo Starr requested Ol’ Blue Eyes sings it for his then-wife, Maureen, who was a big Sinatra fan. Sammy Cahn rewrote the lyrics to make it personal and called it The Lady Is A Champ. Ringo I believe owns the only copy.
