Dark Side of the Moon

This week in 1982 Pink Floyd broke a new record when their 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon spent its 491st consecutive week on the American album chart before dropping out the following week. It has come back several times over the years and eventually 741 weeks on the chart in total. In the UK, it’s the sixth best-selling album of all-time and the highest not to reach number one in the album chart.

I’ve chosen Us & Them from this album as it was one of the songs originally written for the 1970 film Zabriskie Point but dismissed by the director as being, “Beautiful, but too sad.” It’s also one of the first song in which Pink Floyd used female backing singers and on this track you can hear Doris Troy, Liza Strike and Leslie Duncan.
